Applying for Campus Placement does not guarantee that you will be offered a seat to take clinical-based courses at the Tyler, Longview or Palestine campus.

Campus Placement Decisions

Conditional Campus Placement
Offered a seat at one of the three campus locations. Eligible to begin clinical-based course if you complete the conditional requirements outlined in the placement notification

Waitlist Placement
Unable to offer a seat at one of the three campuses currently, but you are active on a reserve list and eligible for placement if a seat becomes available before the start of the semester. Placement on the waitlist does not guarantee you will be offered a seat during this application cycle.

Not Selected
You have not bee offered placement at one of the three campuses and will not be considered for placement during this application cycle. You will need to reapply in the next application period.

Not Eligible
Your application was incomplete or did not meet the required application criteria. You will not be considered for campus placement this application cycle. You need to meet with your academic advisor to correct any missing or ineligible items, then reapply in the next application period.

Technical Standards and Essential Functions Acknowledgement

The University of Texas at Tyler School of Nursing (SON) has a responsibility to current and future patients to train qualified nursing students capable of providing a standard of care incumbent upon a well-trained, competent nurse. For this reason, the SON requires students to participate in and demonstrate certain standards of capability necessary to the education process and the practice of nursing.

Accepted students must meet certain standards of capability with or without reasonable accommodations for matriculation, continued enrollment, and graduation with a nursing degree.

POLICY

Accepted applicants and students must meet certain standards of capability with or without reasonable accommodations and/or assistive technology. The Technical Standards are based upon, and adhere to, the standards set forth by the American Association of College of Nursing.

TECHNICAL STANDARDS & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Please read the following technical standards & essential functions and choose yes if you understand and agree to the technical standards & essential functions set forth.

1. Observation: A nursing student must demonstrate adequate sensory function (e.g., vision, hearing, and touch) with or without accommodations, including assistive technology, to observe a patient accurately at a distance and close at hand. The student must also be able to observe demonstrations and experiments in the basic sciences.

2. Communication: A nursing student must be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. They must also be able to adjust their communication style based on observing a patient’s understanding, mood, activity, posture, and non-verbal communication cues. The student must also be able to communicate with other health care professionals, community members, etc.

3. Psychomotor Skills: A nursing student must execute the maneuvers necessary to perform a physical exam, render routine and emergent care, and safely execute the motor movements required to provide general care and emergency treatment to patients. Examples of these include, but are not limited to, palpation, auscultation, percussion, application of pressure, movement around the immobile patient as needed to perform procedures such as maintaining a sterile field, and surgical and non-surgical procedures. Such actions require coordination of both gross and fine muscular movements, equilibrium, and functional use of the senses of touch and vision or the functional equivalent.

4. Intellectual and Cognitive Abilities: A nursing student must be able to problem-solve effectively and rapidly; learn; reason; calculate; formulate and test hypotheses; memorize; process; analyze; rapidly integrate and synthesize information and apply knowledge in an environment of high stress and distraction.

5. Behavioral and Social: A nursing student must exercise professional judgment and promptly complete all responsibilities attendant to their academic work, teamwork, and patient care. The student must possess the ability to develop mature, sensitive, and effective professional relationships with peers, faculty, staff, and members of the healthcare team. The student must be able to give and receive constructive feedback. The student must demonstrate the ability to process feedback and utilize it to conform to expected professional standards. Finally, the student must manage adversity and stress so that abilities and competencies to perform are not negatively impacted.

6. Ethics: A nursing student must perform in an ethical manner in all dealings with peers, faculty, staff, and patients. Questions of breach of ethical conduct will be referred to the Dean or the Dean’s designee for resolution under the Student Code of Conduct.

7. Quality: Program quality is based upon adherence to standards of education, examination, and evaluation established by accrediting organizations, certifying bodies and licensure boards. Students are expected to comply with these standards in order for the program to achieve and maintain necessary accreditation, certification and licensure requirements and promote competency in nursing practice.

Campus Placement Choice

Clinical-based courses are offered at three campus locations: Tyler, Longview, and Palestine. Use the options below to indicate your primary campus choice. If you are open to attending clinical-based courses at other campuses, you can select a second choice.

When you select your first and/or second-choice campus, carefully consider if you can fulfill the commitment of attending in-person class and clinical at that location 3-4 days a week.

If you are currently or have previously enrolled in a nursing program you must have a Verification of Standing (VOS) form completed by your previous institution to determine your eligibility to apply for the Pre-Licensure BSN track. The VOS review process can take up to 10 business days once the form is received.

Texas Board of Nursing Background Check

Criminal background checks are performed on all applicants for Licensure in Texas. A criminal background check must be completed through the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) based on the set of fingerprints you provide to IdentoGo.

Students must complete a background check through the BON New and Accepted Student Roster process before they can begin clinical-based courses in the Pre-licensure BSN track.

Step One: The School of Nursing submits the New/Accepted Student Roster to the BON.
Step Two: BON enter the student information into their internal fingerprint database. This step is what adds students to the list with IdentoGo.
Step Three: BON notify the School of Nursing that the roster has been entered into the system.
Step Four: Students receive an email directly from IdentoGo with directions on how to schedule an appointment to submit fingerprints.
Step Five: The BON receives information from DPS and FBI regarding the criminal background check (CBC) results.
Step Six: Students will receive one of the following outcomes: Blue Card (students that are eligible) or an Outcome/Approval Letter.

If you plan to relocate to a new address any time between submitting your application and the intended start semester, you can enter a PO Box or another trusted address to receive your CBC outcome. If not, we recommend contacting the Post Office to set up Mail Forwarding and then providing the School of Nursing with your new address.

Notice to Students: The email address that you provide to the Board is required to schedule fingerprinting for your criminal background check. The email address you provide to the Board is subject to release to the public pursuant to the Texas Public Information Act.

At the time you apply for Campus Placement, you can have a maximum of five (5) outstanding core/prerequisites courses “in progress” during the time of application.

All students seeking their first baccalaureate degree from UT Tyler are required to satisfy all requirements of the Texas Core Curriculum. The Core Curriculum objectives serve as the UT Tyler student learning outcomes for collegiate-level general education competencies of all undergraduate degree programs.

ATI TEAS Exam

All applicants to the BSN Track must complete the ATI TEAS entrance exam and provide proof of completion through ATI.

ATI TEAS Exam taken on campus at UT Tyler
If you completed your ATI TEAS exam through one of the in person testing dates offered by UT Tyler and tested under the UT Tyler ATI school code (U of TX Tyler) you do not need to use the ATI Transcript Service to submit your official test report. If you complete the exam under the UT Tyler institution testing code, we have access to your exam report.

ATI TEAS Exam taken at an External Institution or Remote
If you completed your ATI TEAS exam through an external institution or ATI's remote proctoring you must submit your official ATI TEAS transcript to UT Tyler (a fee is required). Directions on how to submit this are included in the following link: https://www.atitesting.com/teas/transcript

If you believe you have previously submitted your ATI TEAS scores or want to verify that they have been received, you can contact the Nursing Advising Center at 903-566-7320 to confirm they have been received. Please allow 48-72 hours for your testing report to be received before reaching out to confirm that we have received it.
