Technical Standards and Essential Functions Acknowledgement
The University of Texas at Tyler School of Nursing (SON) has a responsibility to current and future patients to train qualified nursing students capable of providing a standard of care incumbent upon a well-trained, competent nurse. For this reason, the SON requires students to participate in and demonstrate certain standards of capability necessary to the education process and the practice of nursing.
Accepted students must meet certain standards of capability with or without reasonable accommodations for matriculation, continued enrollment, and graduation with a nursing degree.
Students are selected based on their academic, personal, and extracurricular dimensions. The SON if committed to maintaining equal educational opportunity and Non-Discrimination as outlined in The University of Texas at Tyler Handbook for Operation Procedures. POLICY
Accepted applicants and students must meet certain standards of capability with or without reasonable accommodations and/or assistive technology. The Technical Standards are based upon, and adhere to, the standards set forth by the American Association of College of Nursing.
TECHNICAL STANDARDS & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.
Observation:
A nursing student must demonstrate adequate sensory function (e.g., vision, hearing, and touch) with or without accommodations, including assistive technology, to observe a patient accurately at a distance and close at hand. The student must also be able to observe demonstrations and experiments in the basic sciences.

2. Communication:
A nursing student must be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. They must also be able to adjust their communication style based on observing a patient’s understanding, mood, activity, posture, and non-verbal communication cues. The student must also be able to communicate with other health care professionals, community members, etc.

3. Psychomotor Skills:
A nursing student must execute the maneuvers necessary to perform a physical exam, render routine and emergent care, and safely execute the motor movements required to provide general care and emergency treatment to patients. Examples of these include, but are not limited to, palpation, auscultation, percussion, application of pressure, movement around the immobile patient as needed to perform procedures such as maintaining a sterile field, and surgical and non-surgical procedures. Such actions require coordination of both gross and fine muscular movements, equilibrium, and functional use of the senses of touch and vision or the functional equivalent.

4. Intellectual and Cognitive Abilities:
A nursing student must be able to problem-solve effectively and rapidly; learn; reason; calculate; formulate and test hypotheses; memorize; process; analyze; rapidly integrate and synthesize information and apply knowledge in an environment of high stress and distraction.

5. Behavioral and Social:
A nursing student must exercise professional judgment and promptly complete all responsibilities attendant to their academic work, teamwork, and patient care. The student must possess the ability to develop mature, sensitive, and effective professional relationships with peers, faculty, staff, and members of the healthcare team. The student must be able to give and receive constructive feedback. The student must demonstrate the ability to process feedback and utilize it to conform to expected professional standards. Finally, the student must manage adversity and stress so that abilities and competencies to perform are not negatively impacted.

6. Ethics:
A nursing student must perform in an ethical manner in all dealings with peers, faculty, staff, and patients. Questions of breach of ethical conduct will be referred to the Dean or the Dean’s designee for resolution under the Student Code of Conduct.

7. Quality:
Program quality is based upon adherence to standards of education, examination, and evaluation established by accrediting organizations, certifying bodies and licensure boards. Students are expected to comply with these standards in order for the program to achieve and maintain necessary accreditation, certification and licensure requirements and promote competency in nursing practice.

UT Tyler Nursing is in the process of transition to a new curriculum. Summer 2026 is the
last
semester you can apply for campus placement to begin Level One clinical-based courses on the current curriculum using NURS 3303 Pathophysiology as a prerequisite.
The clinical-based courses for the new curriculum will begin fall 2026. Any student who applies for Campus Placement Fall 2026 or later must complete the new curriculum prerequisite courses (NURS 1301, NURS 2301 and NURS 2302).

- This application is for BSN Campus Placement for the SUMMER 2026 semester.
- Communication is ONLY sent to your UT Tyler Patriot email. Check this daily for any updates and respond to any communication within 24 hours.
- Campus Placement decisions will be sent to your Patriot email approximately 2-3 weeks after the application closes.
- Upon review of all applications, applicants will receive one of three decisions:
- Conditional Campus Placement
- Eligible to begin clinical-based nursing coursework if all conditional requirements are met by the deadline.
- Placement on the Waitlist
- Still in consideration for Campus Placement only
if
a seat becomes available. All conditional requirements must be met by the deadline. There is no guarantee a seat will become available or that any available seat would be on your preferred campus. Must reapply if not offered a spot off the waitlist.
- Not Offered Campus Placement
- Did not qualify for placement this period, must reapply in the next application period.
- Applicants offered Conditional Campus Placement or Waitlist Placement must complete a mandatory Onboarding Session that outlines conditional requirements.

The completed for must be received before the application deadline. This form will be emailed to you upon submission of this application.
Prerequisite Information
Students must be Texas Core-complete
BEFORE
beginning the Clinical BSN Track. A maximum of five (5) outstanding prerequisites courses, including a university level Pathophysiology, can be in progress during the time of application.

All applicants to the BSN Track must complete the ATI TEAS entrance exam and provide proof of completion through ATI.

If you completed your ATI TEAS exam through one of the in person testing dates offered by UT Tyler and tested under the UT Tyler ATI school code (U of TX Tyler) you
do not
need to use the ATI Transcript Service to submit your official test report. If you complete the exam under the UT Tyler institution testing code, we have access to your exam report.
